TOYAMA Kirari
Japan Toyama Toyama
Kengo Kuma and Associates
This multipurpose complex in central Toyama City houses the Toyama Glass Art Museum, Toyama City Library, and the First Bank of Toyama, Ltd. It is centered on an oblique atrium that effectively introduces natural light from the south, and the museum, library, and café are integrated without boundaries, resulting in a cultural facility geared towards regional community interaction, where various forms of intellectual exchange and inspiration occur. The atrium is encircled by thick planks of locally sourced, unfinished cedar, creating a warm yet dynamic space not found in conventional public buildings.
The façade features a random arrangement of locally procured, characteristic Toyama materials – aluminum, glass, and stone – in a random arrangement, and it resonates with the hard surfaces of the Tateyama mountain range towering in the distance, which are a symbol of Toyama Prefecture.
